Check: make, model, year, colour, fuel type, MOT status.
At the viewing - exterior checks
Walk around the car in good daylight.
- Check panel gaps are even (uneven gaps suggest accident repair)
- Look along body panels for ripples or colour mismatches
- Check all glass for chips and cracks
- Inspect tyres for legal tread depth and uneven wear
- Check all lights work
- Look underneath for rust or damage
Interior checks
- Check all electrics work - windows, mirrors, heated seats
- Test air conditioning
- Check for water ingress (damp carpets, fogged glass)
- Check all instruments work on startup
- Look for excessive wear inconsistent with mileage
Under the bonnet
- Check oil level and condition
- Check coolant level
- Look for leaks, corrosion, or damaged hoses
- Check the oil filler cap for white residue
(can indicate head gasket issues)
Test drive
- Drive for at least 20 minutes including motorway speed
- Check for pulling under braking
- Listen for unusual noises
- Test all gears (manual) or gear changes (automatic)
- Check clutch biting point is not too high
Documents to check
- V5C logbook - ensure seller name matches
- MOT certificates - look for recurring advisories
- Service history - stamps or digital records
- Finance check - confirm no outstanding finance
